Natural or conventional cosmetics?

By choosing natural cosmetics, you give your skin the very best that nature has to offer.

Why is that?

We all use cosmetics every day to look and feel our best, but do we really know what they contain and how they affect our skin? On the one hand, our skin protects us from the outside world; on the other, much of what is applied to it is absorbed inwards – including from ordinary cosmetic products, which contain hazardous chemicals, and in large quantities at that.

The cosmetics industry is enormous the world over. According to The Economist, the global beauty industry is worth over 160 billion dollars a year. Most companies spend a great deal of money on advertising that constantly tells us we need their products in order to look young, healthy and beautiful.

What an irony that is, considering that ordinary cosmetic products contain hazardous chemicals in large quantities. These chemical substances irritate our skin, penetrate deep into our bodies, disrupt our hormonal balance and may ultimately lead to cancer.

Our body absorbs toxins from soaps, shampoos, hair and body lotions, sprays and other hair care products. With lipstick, we take these substances in through the mouth as well. Hand creams, meanwhile, can be swallowed when we eat with our hands.

Some of the most harmful chemical ingredients found in cosmetic products are:

ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS (AHAs) – alpha-hydroxy acids found in personal care products. They exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, and with them the natural protective barrier of the epidermis.

METHYLPARABEN, ETHYLPARABEN – parabens, used as preservatives. They can cause premature ageing of the skin from the sun and lead to dermatitis. Parabens are thought to be behind around 80% of breast tumours. Parabens found in breast cancer tumours have been shown to mimic oestrogen, potentially leading to cancer as well as to disruption of the endocrine system. (Source). They are present in antiperspirant deodorants, creams, shampoos, conditioners and body lotions.

PHTHALATES – dibutyl phthalate (DBP, DEP, also butyl ester) are the most common. In cosmetics manufacturing, DEP is used as a solvent and fixative for fragrances and as a substitute for alcohol. DBP is a common component of nail varnish. Most often, in the list of ingredients on the label, phthalates hide behind the term “fragrance” (“perfume”).

According to research data from scientists in various countries, phthalates trigger the development of conditions such as:

    • Impaired activity of the sex glands (DEHP).
    • Polycystic ovaries.
    • Female and male infertility. Reduced testosterone production.
    • Elevated levels of phthalates in the air (DEHP and BBZP) cause asthma in children.
    • In men, they contribute to abdominal obesity and insulin resistance (a precursor of type 2 diabetes), and increase the risk of developing testicular cancer.
    • In children, they cause disorders of puberty. South Korean specialists have identified a link between increased phthalate levels in urine and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children under the age of three have been found to be more vulnerable to the effects of phthalates. These hazardous substances may be present in shampoos, powders, creams, lotions and toys.
    • In pregnant women, they can cause defects in foetal development. From a biochemical point of view, phthalates displace oestrogen, which has an adverse effect on the course of pregnancy. (source)

ALUMINIUM CHLOROHYDRATE – a chemical every bit as dangerous as parabens. It is found in antiperspirant deodorants.

Synthetic (chemically synthesised) ALCOHOL, COLLAGEN, FLUORIDE – harmful ingredients in most drinks, medicines, creams and toothpastes. They lead to cancer of the throat, mouth and tongue, and also play a role in the development of bone cancer.

TARS AND MINERAL OILS. Tars are carcinogenic colourants, full of arsenic and lead (in hair dyes), while the oils are the petroleum derivative petroleum jelly, which forms a greasy film on the skin and stops it breathing naturally.

HEAVY METALS (LEAD, ALUMINIUM, ARSENIC, NICKEL, BERYLLIUM, MERCURY, CADMIUM AND NICKEL) – impurities and contaminants in the various ingredients used in cosmetics can expose you to some appalling metals that bioaccumulate and cause cancer.

These worrying facts make us realise that, while we probably cannot remove every chemical ingredient from our home, we can drastically reduce how much we use them.

What can we use instead?

The answer is simple – natural cosmetics.

Nature has made sure we have everything we need; we simply have to use it and know how to do so to best effect. Recently, old traditional recipes and natural ingredients have been making a comeback. These tried and tested methods deliver quick results and, above all, are gentle on the body and on nature.

The most commonly used natural ingredients in cosmetic products are: plant and herbal extracts, homeopathic ingredients, essential oils, fruit and seed oils and other organic products. To these we can add the magic of Black Sea lye and liman mud – a unique natural product and a treasure of world importance.

Tea tree oil and turmeric act as antiseptics, aloe vera extract, coconut oil and cocoa butter are natural moisturisers, hemp extract protects dry skin, rose water is a natural toner, and there are many, many more…

Natural cosmetics – cosmetics made predominantly from ingredients created and derived from nature. The most widespread ingredients are substances derived from plants. The leaves, bark, roots, the oil extracted from the seeds, the fruit and sometimes the whole plant are all used. That is why this type of cosmetics is often also called herbal cosmetics.

What are the benefits of natural cosmetics?

The benefits of natural cosmetics are countless. Most importantly, thanks to their natural origin, they are harmless to the skin. A well-judged combination of effective herbs not only delivers a good cosmetic result, but also helps to overcome skin or hair problems.

The essential oils extracted from certain plants have remarkable power. Used in creams and ointments as aromatherapy agents, they soothe and relieve physical and mental problems, lifting your mood and altering how you feel. Nature can offer us a wide variety of pleasures, as long as we are willing to make the most of them. Using quality natural products is part of bringing together health, beauty, relaxation and harmony in our thoughts and sensations.

Using products that contain only a few ingredients makes life simpler. If we react to something, we can easily pinpoint the cause.

Using natural and herbal products is far more enjoyable, not only because of the important benefits they bring, but also because they give you a sense of connection with nature. The natural look and the harmony that natural products radiate and pass on simply cannot be imitated or replaced.

A cream made from natural oils is irresistibly appealing, and its fragrance feels alive. The natural ingredients in the body lotion sink in and merge with your skin, giving it an incredible look and resilience in the most natural and pleasant way.

A suitable face cream, body lotion, shampoo and hair conditioner. These are the essentials we need.

Choosing natural and organic products can have a positive effect not only on our own health and wellbeing, but also on the wellbeing of those close to us and on the environment as a whole.

If you have never given any thought to the harm caused by the chemical ingredients in cosmetics, now is the time to do so.

Skincare should be a priority.

Our desire to look better is not going to disappear any time soon. Fortunately for us, safer, more natural companies are emerging to give us exactly what we want – beauty without the risk. When buying natural cosmetics, do NOT rush your decision, because your health should come first.
