Black Sea lye (also known as “Pomorie lye”, “mother lye” or “medicinal lye”) is a natural product obtained during salt production in the Burgas and Pomorie salt lakes, with a concentration of all the beneficial elements of sea and lake water that is many times higher. In recent years it has been extracted only in the Burgas salt pans. As the water evaporates from the salt pan, the lye remains above the salt layer as a cloudy, thick, oil-like liquid with a yellow-brown colour and a reddish tint, and sometimes a pungent smell. According to a number of studies carried out over the years by scientists from ISUL and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, it has an anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiseptic action. In its qualities it is identical to the healing liman mud. Intense physical activity and heavy exertion during sport cause profuse sweating, through which considerable amounts of magnesium are lost. Fluid loss is significant (around 2 litres per hour), particularly at high temperatures and high air humidity. Magnesium deficiency is also caused by the increased consumption of magnesium due to the active metabolism and the accelerated renal excretion of magnesium. Athletes are subject to prolonged physical exertion and suffer from magnesium deficiency more often than people who do not take part in sport actively.
