Dr Shishkov, what makes Pomorie therapeutic mud unique?
This is liman mud, different from that found at other mud therapy deposits around the world – there are such sites in Italy, France, Spain, Japan…
Its uniqueness lies in its specific chemical composition and its high sulphur and iron content.
It is well known that sulphur is essential for every movement the human body makes. Over the years its levels become depleted, and there is no known medicine that can restore its normal amount in the body. This is where Pomorie mud comes in, in the form of mud applications and mud baths.
Which conditions are they used for?
The main focus of treatment with Pomorie mud is conditions of the musculoskeletal system – all forms of osteoarthritis, lower back pain, osteochondrosis (so-called bone spurs). Second come conditions of the peripheral nervous system – disc disease, plexitis, periarthritis. Third are skin conditions, including psoriasis. And not least – conditions of the female and male reproductive systems.
Is a medical examination compulsory before starting treatments at your centre?

On admission, every patient undergoes a compulsory medical examination. Cardiovascular conditions (previous heart attack, second- or third-degree hypertension), pregnancy and certain malignant conditions are absolute contraindications.

Is the treatment affordable for Bulgarian citizens? Do you work with the National Social Security Institute?
There are 2 sanatoriums and 1 balneo hotel where mud therapy procedures are offered. Alongside privately arranged bookings, we also work under the programme of the National Social Security Institute, which allows citizens to receive treatment for 10-15 days and to undergo the relevant procedures.
The patient must be covered by social insurance and have a referral from their GP. They need to contact the relevant regional office of the National Social Security Institute in order to be admitted for balneotherapy.
Every Bulgarian has a duty to pay attention to their health.
There are 64 balneotherapy facilities in the country, but on a global scale we lag behind when it comes to prevention, unlike the Americans, the British and the Germans, who make full use of every opportunity offered by their social programmes.
