Mud Therapy in Pomorie
Pomorie therapeutic mud is a sedimentary liman mud – black and greasy, with a hydrogen sulphide odour and a silicate-carbonate skeleton. It is recommended for the treatment of all types of disorders of the musculoskeletal system (with the exception of acute and specific conditions), of the peripheral nervous system, gynaecological problems and infertility, as well as skin conditions.
In 1905 Dr Petar Stoyanov rediscovered Pomorie Lake and, a few years later, carried out research on it. The lake was formed after a catastrophic earthquake in 740 BC. Following the research, a mud therapy centre was built, and today Pomorie is a renowned seaside mud therapy resort.
Peat peloids form in marshy areas as a result of the prolonged decomposition of organic matter and are rich in humic acids with high biological activity. In Bulgaria, the best-known peat deposit is the one near the town of Banya (close to Karlovo). The mud is extracted from a boggy, marshy area covering some 30 decares. The peat deposit is saturated with mineral water, and the thickness of the peat layer varies – from 30 cm to 1.5 m. The peat is of plant-organic origin, enriched with elements from the mineral water. The resulting mud is dark brown in colour, with a faint hydrogen sulphide odour, and contains gases, hormones, antibiotics and vitamins. Locally, it has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, and it also speeds up the dispersal of swelling.
The beneficial effect of therapeutic mud on the metabolism and on tissue nutrition enhances tissue regeneration. Spring peloids are silt deposits on the beds of freshwater bodies, formed by the decomposition of the plant and animal species living in them. Spring muds, which contain both mineral and organic substances, are considered to have the gentlest effect. Volcanic peloids form as a result of volcanic activity and contain the highest levels of minerals, with only traces of organic matter. Conditions for which mud therapy is recommended The range of applications of therapeutic muds is very wide.
Peloids are indispensable in the treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, as well as urological, gynaecological, skin (neurodermatitis, psoriasis, eczema) and other problems. The contraindications are relatively few – tuberculosis, thrombophlebitis, thyrotoxicosis, renal failure, cardiovascular and oncological conditions. It is also not recommended in cases of acute inflammatory processes. Mud therapy acts not only on a particular condition, but also boosts the immune defences of the entire body.
