It is produced wherever table salt is made the traditional way \u2014 by evaporating sea water.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sea water seeps into the liman lakes around Pomorie and Burgas, where the sun concentrates it.<\/li>\n<li>It is then channelled into smaller artificial basins \u2014 the so-called &#8220;pans&#8221; \u2014 where evaporation continues.<\/li>\n<li>Once it reaches the required density, the water passes into the salt pan itself. There, sodium chloride \u2014 table salt \u2014 crystallises first and forms a layer of about 10\u201312 cm on the bottom.<\/li>\n<li>The liquid that remains above the salt layer is the lye.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;Lye in itself is a complex of magnesium salts \u2014 chiefly magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate,&#8221; Grudev explains. For salt producers it is a residual product: they pump it out in order to reach the salt. For AZIMUTH 6000, however, it is the raw material.<\/p>\n<h2>When is lye harvested?<\/h2>\n<p>Lye is available once a year \u2014 in the period from around 25 August to 10 September, when it has &#8220;ripened&#8221;. That is when the company buys up the available quantity and begins the longer process of treatment: <strong>filtering and stabilising<\/strong>. This allows the lye to be used throughout the following year until the new harvest. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/blog\/interview-on-bulgare-tv-with-grudimir-grudev-producer-of-anchialo-lye-products\/\">More about stabilising lye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why are magnesium salts important?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Grudev, with age \u2014 after 35 to 40 \u2014 the body increasingly lacks magnesium. Many people take magnesium tablets, whereas lye offers a natural Bulgarian source of magnesium salts that are applied to the skin. He adds that, in his words, only 3 or 4 places in the world still have lye, which is why he calls it a &#8220;national treasure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>The sanatorium \u2014 at home<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;The idea behind these products is to bring the sanatorium home,&#8221; says Grudev. Not everyone can afford \u2014 financially, or above all in terms of time \u2014 to spend 7 to 10 days at a sanatorium once or twice a year. The treatments carried out there can also be done at home.<\/p>\n<h2>Which lye products did he present?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">Black Sea lye<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 in its pure form, with no additives.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">Massage gels<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">massage oils<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 at the time in five varieties, in which lye makes up over 95% of the product: a standard version and ones with lavender, juniper, rosemary and arnica.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">Mouthwash and toothpaste<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the toothpaste contains 35% lye. Karmen Lazarova says she uses the toothpaste and that it firms up the gums and removes bad breath. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t replace the dentist, but it helps,&#8221; both agree. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/blog\/interview-on-bulgare-tv-with-grudimir-grudev-producer-of-anchialo-lye-products\/\">See also the recipe for the toothpaste with 35% lye<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Body applicator<\/strong> \u2014 a cotton cloth measuring 60 \u00d7 30 cm, soaked in lye, for rubs and applications on problem areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">Soaps<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 brand new at the time: with Black Sea lye, and with lye and liman mud.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/\">Shower gel<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 with about 10% Black Sea lye.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Serum with hyaluronic acid<\/strong> \u2014 for hydrating the skin in summer and for facial beauty treatments all year round.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Lye or mud?<\/h2>\n<p>Asked whether liman mud contains lye, Grudev replies that it does \u2014 and in sufficient quantity.
