How to Read the Label"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We use cosmetics every day \u2014 soap, shampoo, cream, toothpaste. Our skin protects us from the outside world, yet part of what we put on it is absorbed. That is why more and more people read the label and look for <strong>natural cosmetics<\/strong>. What does that actually mean, and how can you choose sensibly \u2014 without being alarmed by every chemical name?<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-summary\">\n<p class=\"lb-summary-title\">In brief<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural cosmetics = ingredients mainly of natural origin, with no or minimal synthetic additives.<\/li>\n<li>In the EU, cosmetics are strictly regulated \u2014 the most hazardous substances are banned by law.<\/li>\n<li>The label (INCI) lists ingredients by quantity \u2014 the first ones are the basis of the product.<\/li>\n<li>A shorter, clearer ingredient list = it is easier to spot what your skin does not tolerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What natural cosmetics are<\/h2>\n<p>Natural cosmetics are made mainly from ingredients drawn from nature: leaves, roots, bark, seeds and fruit \u2014 which is why they are often called herbal cosmetics too. These include plant extracts, essential oils, fruit and seed oils, and minerals. Among the most valuable natural raw materials is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/lye_en\/\">Black Sea lye<\/a> along with liman mud \u2014 both rich in magnesium and marine minerals.<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients many people prefer to avoid<\/h2>\n<p>The cosmetics industry is vast \u2014 according to The Economist, worth over 160 billion dollars a year. Alongside the beneficial ingredients, conventional cosmetics also contain some that are the subject of debate. Here are the most widely discussed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parabens<\/strong> (METHYLPARABEN, ETHYLPARABEN and others) \u2014 preservatives. Some weakly mimic oestrogen, which is why five types of paraben are banned in the EU and strict limits apply to the rest. If you want to avoid them, look for \u201cparaben-free\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phthalates<\/strong> (DBP, DEHP) \u2014 once used in nail varnishes and fragrances. In the EU, DBP and DEHP are <strong>banned<\/strong> in cosmetics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mineral oils and petroleum jelly<\/strong> (PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM, PETROLATUM) \u2014 petroleum derivatives that form a layer on the skin. They are safe, but they do not nourish the skin the way plant oils do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong acids<\/strong> (AHA) \u2014 they exfoliate, and with excessive use they may irritate the skin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aluminium salts<\/strong> (ALUMINUM CHLOROHYDRATE) \u2014 found in antiperspirants. There is no proven harm at the permitted levels, but some people prefer deodorants without them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"lb-tip\">\n<p class=\"lb-tip-title\">No need to panic<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChemical\u201d does not mean \u201cpoison\u201d \u2014 water is a chemical compound too. In the EU, cosmetics are assessed under Regulation (EC) No 1223\/2009, and the most hazardous substances are banned. Natural cosmetics are the better choice not because the alternative is \u201cpoison\u201d, but because they give the skin more of what it needs and less of what it does not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How to read the label (INCI)<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The order matters.<\/strong> Ingredients are listed by quantity \u2014 the first 3\u20135 are the basis of the product.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Latin names<\/strong> usually indicate plants \u2014 for example ARNICA MONTANA (arnica) or ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (rosemary).<\/li>\n<li><strong>AQUA<\/strong> is water; <strong>MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE<\/strong> and <strong>MAGNESIUM SULFATE<\/strong> are the magnesium salts that make lye what it is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PARFUM<\/strong> means fragrance. In natural cosmetics it usually comes from essential oils.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A shorter ingredient list<\/strong> \u2014 if your skin reacts to something, you will find the cause more easily.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Natural ingredients that work<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tea tree oil and turmeric<\/strong> \u2014 antiseptic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aloe vera, coconut and cocoa butter<\/strong> \u2014 natural moisturisers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hemp oil<\/strong> \u2014 protects dry skin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rose water<\/strong> \u2014 a natural toner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Essential oils<\/strong> \u2014 aromatherapy: they relax, invigorate and lift the mood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Black Sea lye and liman mud<\/strong> \u2014 magnesium and marine minerals for the skin, joints and muscles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why it is worth it<\/h2>\n<p>Well-chosen natural ingredients not only have a cosmetic effect, they also help with skin and hair problems. Using them brings a sense of connection with nature, too. And choosing natural and organic products is good not just for us, but for the environment as well.<\/p>\n<p>When you buy cosmetics, take your time \u2014 read the label.
