One such happy chance for me was discovering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/lye_procedures_en\/\">the therapeutic mud baths in Pomorie<\/a>. Two friends who had been going for years invited me to join them \u2014 and curiosity got the better of me.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-summary\">\n<p class=\"lb-summary-title\">In brief<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pomorie mud is <strong>liman mud<\/strong> \u2014 rich and greasy, with a high sulphur and iron content; the unpleasant smell comes from the hydrogen sulphide.<\/li>\n<li>You can apply it at the sanatorium (after a doctor&#8217;s examination) or on the small beaches along Pomorie Lake.<\/li>\n<li>For a noticeable effect you need <strong>at least 12 treatments<\/strong>; the results show after about a month.<\/li>\n<li>Mud is contraindicated in heart conditions, high blood pressure, varicose veins and oncological diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The queue for the sanatorium<\/h2>\n<p>I became even more intrigued when I learned how hard it is to get a place at the sanatorium, where the treatments are carried out under medical supervision. On the first day of the month, when the cards are handed out, people queue all night. Officially you can book by phone or email, but in practice that doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>I had no card and had missed the first of the month, so I rented a room and by 7 in the morning I was standing outside the doctor&#8217;s surgery to be prescribed treatments on a paying basis. The queue was impressive, and a large part of those waiting were Russians. The staff turned out to be surprisingly friendly. An examination by a very courteous doctor established that I had a curvature of the spine \u2014 and that is how I gained access to the sanatorium&#8217;s mud beach.<\/p>\n<h2>Day one: a courtyard full of &#8220;aliens&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>The mud beach is a walled, sand-covered courtyard next to the sanatorium building. At the appointed hour some 30 women in their birthday suits rushed towards a large stone trough filled with raven-black mud with a rather unpleasant smell. The smearing began, from head to toe \u2014 only the whites of our eyes were left showing. Within minutes the courtyard was full of alien creatures, visibly delighted by their contact with Pomorie&#8217;s black gold.<\/p>\n<p>The conversations all revolved around the benefits of the mud. Many were there for the tenth or fifteenth time. One woman described how she had overcome severe disc disease and hadn&#8217;t missed a year since. Another said the mud baths had helped her psoriasis, while a third was hoping to resolve a gynaecological problem.<\/p>\n<h2>The Egyptian mud bath<\/h2>\n<p>We dried like clay statues, studying the drawings on the walls \u2014 ancient Egyptians and inscriptions reminding you that the treatment comes from an Egyptian technique for healing and beautification.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-tip\">\n<p class=\"lb-tip-title\">How the Egyptian mud bath is done<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It begins with a sunbath, in the open air.<\/li>\n<li>The body is coated with about <strong>1 cm<\/strong> of warmed, thick mud.<\/li>\n<li>You wait for the mask to dry and crack.<\/li>\n<li>The body is rinsed with sea water or with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/lye_en\/\">brine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The whole treatment takes about <strong>2 hours<\/strong> and can be done with liman mud or with mineral-spring mud.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>After 20\u201330 minutes as little black devils, it was time for the warm lye showers to wash the mud off. Lye plays no less a part than the mud. Afterwards <strong>no soap or shampoo is used<\/strong>, so as not to neutralise the action of the minerals.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t believe how clean and soft my skin was after the mud, rinsed off with lye. After each treatment I looked at myself in the mirror with greater satisfaction, and my body felt light, as if relieved of a weight. I was already falling in love with the Pomorie mud baths.<\/p>\n<h2>The mud and the huma clay by the lake<\/h2>\n<p>Falling in love turned into love when I discovered that you can use the mud not only at the sanatorium, but right by Pomorie Lake itself. There are small beaches there where resourceful locals dig out the mud and strain it of pebbles and shells. For 2 leva you can coat yourself in thick black mud like marmalade. Sometimes there is fresh <strong>huma clay<\/strong> too, just taken out of the lake \u2014 I was advised to use it on my face and hair, and to leave the mud for my body.<\/p>\n<p>You wash it off in the lake. Its water is called <strong>brine<\/strong> \u2014 salty and rich in minerals thanks to the sediments and the processes in the lake. So the mud comes full circle: from the lake to the body and back again. Little fish swim around you in the shallows.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I prefer the treatments by the lake: the view of the mirror-like water fringed with reeds, the black granite sand you can warm yourself on, and the conversations with others who love this place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-tip\">\n<p class=\"lb-tip-title\">What the doctors say about the mud on the shore<\/p>\n<p>Mud loses half its properties within a few days in the open air, and mud left lying on the shore may be contaminated, warns physiotherapist Dr Antoaneta Grozeva. Photo: Mojmir Churavy, Wikimedia Commons (CC0)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>&#8220;The mud makes you younger&#8221; \u2014 what the regulars say<\/h2>\n<p>One pensioner, a regular visitor, still plays football and tennis several times a week \u2014 he says he keeps his knees going with mud treatments. Another comes every Saturday and Sunday from out of town to &#8220;stock up&#8221; on minerals for better circulation. He explained to me that the secret isn&#8217;t to smear the painful spot as if with an ointment: the body absorbs the minerals, circulation and metabolism are boosted \u2014 and that is where the healing effect lies. It is thought that <strong>at least 12 baths<\/strong> are needed, and the effect only shows after a month.<\/p>\n<h2>What the doctors say: sulphur and iron<\/h2>\n<p>According to Dr Stefan Shishkov, chief physician of the Anchialo balneotherapy centre, the mud in Pomorie Lake is liman mud and differs in composition from the mud found in Italy, France, Spain, Japan and other countries. You can read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luga.bg\/en\/blog\/what-do-pomorie-lye-and-liman-mud-treat\/\">the full interview with Dr Shishkov<\/a> separately.<\/p>\n<p>Pomorie mud contains a great deal of sulphur and iron. The unpleasant smell comes from the hydrogen sulphide. Liman mud is greasy to the touch, with an alkaline pH \u2014 a uniform, plastic mass that retains heat for a long time and contains many biologically active substances and living microorganisms. It has formed over thousands of years from the minerals, trace elements and organic substances accumulated by the water.<\/p>\n<p>Sulphur is involved in every movement the body makes, but it becomes depleted over the years, and there is no medication that can replace it. Thanks to this it also helps with conditions of the peripheral nervous system \u2014 disc problems, plexitis, periarthritis \u2014 as well as with skin conditions and certain conditions of the female and male reproductive systems.<\/p>\n<p>In her article &#8220;Mud Baths&#8221;, Irina Stefanova explains that the microparticles in the mud penetrate the skin and gently press on the tissues. In this way they stimulate circulation and help flush out toxins, while at the same time the skin absorbs minerals and biologically active substances.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-tip\">\n<p class=\"lb-tip-title\">When mud is not advisable<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>heart conditions and high blood pressure;<\/li>\n<li>varicose veins;<\/li>\n<li>oncological conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In all cases, consult your doctor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A little history \u2014 and Rafi<\/h2>\n<p>Pomorie Lake is believed to have formed around 740 BC after a major earthquake. In the Roman baths, and later in the Turkish hamams, mud baths were a ritual for recovery after battle, for relaxation and for renewed strength. In 1905 Dr Petar Stoyanov began research into Pomorie mud, which led to the opening of the first mud therapy centre in Pomorie.<\/p>\n<p>Today Rafi looks after one of the little beaches \u2014 a colourful character whom everyone loves. He cleans the beach as early as spring and offers mud and clay all summer long. A small community of mud enthusiasts has already gathered around him.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have had your fill of chatting with them, you can walk ten metres or so along the sandy spit that separates the lake from the sea and carry on to the Black Sea. Isn&#8217;t that paradise? It is no coincidence that 269 bird species have chosen the lake as part of their Via Pontica migration route. The birds have always known about its bounty. Now I have joined them too \u2014 I promised myself I would fly in at least once a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lb-source\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/spisanie8.bg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spisanie8.bg<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Mud baths in Pomorie: practical information<\/h2>\n<p>The account above is a personal experience. Here we have briefly gathered how mud treatments are carried out in Pomorie today. The information is correct as of October 2026 \u2014 conditions change, so do check them in advance.<\/p>\n<h3>Where they are carried out under medical supervision<\/h3>\n<p>Mud treatments in Pomorie are offered by the specialist rehabilitation hospital (the former sanatorium) and by several spa hotels in the town. The hospital operates all year round precisely because of its mud therapy. At both, treatments are prescribed following an examination by a doctor, who determines the type and number according to your state of health and test results.<\/p>\n<h3>What documents are required<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For privately paid treatment at the rehabilitation hospital: a referral from your GP (Ministry of Health form No. 119), medical documentation of the condition, and, for those over 70, a cardiology report as well.<\/li>\n<li>Treatment may also be covered under a clinical pathway of the National Health Insurance Fund or under the National Social Security Institute&#8217;s prevention and rehabilitation programme (for those insured for at least 6 consecutive months). In both cases a doctor&#8217;s referral is required.<\/li>\n<li>At the spa hotels, mud treatments are usually part of a package and begin after a consultation with the hotel&#8217;s doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How the treatments are carried out<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mud application<\/strong> \u2014 the mud is heated to 38\u201340 \u00b0C and applied in a layer of 5\u20136 cm over the body or over the affected area, usually for 15\u201320 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mud bath<\/strong> \u2014 about 20 % mud, diluted in mineral or sea water at a temperature of 37\u201338 \u00b0C.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cavity method<\/strong> \u2014 mud tampons for certain gynaecological and urological conditions, only as prescribed by a doctor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egyptian mud bath<\/strong> \u2014 outdoors, during the warm months; described above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the treatment the mud is washed off with a warm shower \u2014 in Pomorie often with lye.<\/p>\n<h3>How many treatments and when<\/h3>\n<p>The usual course is 12\u201315 treatments, while packages at the spa hotels are most often for 7 or 10 days. Mud therapy at the hospital is available all year round, whereas the open-air Egyptian bath and the small beaches by the lake are for the summer.<\/p>\n<h3>By the lake, without a doctor<\/h3>\n<p>On the small beaches along Pomorie Lake, locals offer strained mud for a nominal fee, and you wash it off in the lake (see above). The lake is a protected area, part of Natura 2000 and a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention \u2014 look after the shore, the reeds and the birds, and follow the instructions on site. And do not forget Dr Grozeva&#8217;s warning: mud that has lain on the shore for a long time loses its properties and may be contaminated.<\/p>\n<h3>When mud treatments are not prescribed<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the above, the medical facilities in Pomorie do not prescribe mud treatments in cases of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the acute stage of an illness, infections and decompensated chronic conditions;<\/li>\n<li>a heart attack within the past year, severe heart rhythm disorders, stage three hypertension, after bypass surgery or a stent;<\/li>\n<li>benign and malignant growths, ovarian cysts, fibroids;<\/li>\n<li>haemorrhage and severe anaemia;<\/li>\n<li>liver cirrhosis and kidney failure;<\/li>\n<li>epilepsy and mental illness;<\/li>\n<li>pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>If you cannot come to Pomorie<\/h3>\n<p>Pomorie liman mud can also be used at home \u2014 for applications and masks.
