In Ancient Egypt, the mud left along the banks after the flooding of the Nile was used to treat a variety of ailments. In the 16th century mud therapy began to be practised in Italy, later in France and Germany. Gradually, the use of mud for therapeutic purposes spread to many other countries as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therapeutic muds, or peloids, are classed as mineral resources and consist of water, organic and mineral substances and gases, the most important of which is hydrogen sulphide. Their composition also includes biologically active substances (hormones, enzymes, vitamins, antibiotics). The presence of antibiotics explains the antimicrobial properties of peloids against staphylococci, streptococci and other microorganisms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mechanism by which mud works is based not only on its chemical composition, but also on its temperature. Since mud has a high heat capacity and low thermal conductivity, once warmed its temperature can remain constant for a long time. It is precisely because of these properties that, in the area of the body where the mud is applied, blood circulation improves and intracellular bioenergetic processes and biochemical reactions are stimulated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through the pores of the skin, the active ingredients of the mud penetrate the tissues and from there enter the bloodstream. This boosts the metabolic processes and stimulates the work of important endocrine organs (pituitary gland, adrenal glands, thyroid gland, sex glands). The healing effect is the result of the combined action of the chemical, biological, electrodynamic and mechanical properties of therapeutic mud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mud therapy requires specialised equipment and technology for extracting the mud, so that its unique healing properties can be used to the full.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Types of peloids<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therapeutic muds fall into 4 main types according to their origin and their physico-chemical properties: liman-lagoon, peat, volcanic and spring muds. Liman-lagoon peloids form in salt water basins. They contain a considerable amount of mineral substances and fewer organic ones (around 10%) and have the most pronounced bactericidal properties. In Bulgaria, Pomorie Lake is renowned for its liman mud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Peloids are fine particles endowed with powerful absorbing capacity. These mineral-rich beautifying powders are obtained from the sea, from rocks or from volcanic springs. To make them fit for use, they are ground very finely and then packaged or added to various cosmetic products: masks, creams or body lotions. Peloids act rather like a vacuum cleaner for the skin \u2013 they free the pores of dirt, dust and sebum and cleanse it perfectly deep down, drawing out everything that is harmful to it. Depending on how they are used, they have either a warming or a cooling effect. All these talents make them indispensable in treating problem skin with blocked capillaries, as well as skin with impaired metabolism or poor blood supply.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Extracted from the depths of the earth and ground into a fine powder, these natural cosmetic treasures are allies of smooth skin, firm contours and a rosy complexion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mud for the body<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Volcanic mud, better known in cosmetics as fango, is an exceptional natural product that undergoes almost no cosmetic refining. It is applied directly to the skin of the body, left to dry slightly and then rinsed off in the shower, without using any other soaps or shower gels.<br \/>\nQuite a few cosmetics companies have recently been enriching their creams for brightening the complexion and softening the skin of the feet with volcanic mud. This product is invaluable for the hair too!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Moroccan rhassoul clay, sea mud and marine clay sediments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">are in no way inferior to fango, whether sold in powder form or incorporated into a cream or a ready-made mask. Their greatest merit is the high concentration of mineral substances, vitamins, sulphur and beneficial microorganisms in their composition. They contain an abundance of ingredients that are good for the skin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Marine clay sediments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most valuable quality of sea mud is that it helps the skin retain moisture. And in this way it works to rejuvenate it. Marine clay sediments from the Dead Sea are above all a balm for dry, flaky skin with a dull, greyish complexion. The grey-green mineral mud from the Dead Sea is quite well known in the cosmetics industry. Its reputation for making the skin smooth and rosy makes it highly sought after. Similar effects, however, can be achieved with any other sea mud added to face masks and to special facial soaps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>White clay (kaolin)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">White clay is the finest and most widely used product of all. It is also a much sought-after raw material in the cosmetics industry \u2013 it is used as a main ingredient in powders and is included in effective masks and facial cleansing products. It is even found in the composition of whitening toothpastes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Depending on its origin, sea mud varies in composition. For example, mud from the North Sea is exceptionally rich in calcium and magnesium compounds, while mud extracted from other, warmer seas is richer in sulphur and microorganisms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The greatest merits of sea mud are that it strengthens the skin&#8217;s barrier function and helps it retain moisture for longer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Rhassoul and clay for deep cleansing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clay and rhassoul draw out like a magnet almost everything that hinders the skin&#8217;s normal breathing: dirt, bacteria and dead epithelial cells.
