It is recommended for disorders of the musculoskeletal system (excluding acute and specific conditions), of the peripheral nervous system, for gynaecological problems and infertility, as well as for skin conditions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-summary\">\n<p class=\"lb-summary-title\">In brief<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pomorie mud is a <strong>liman<\/strong> mud \u2014 it forms in a salt lake separated from the sea.<\/li>\n<li>Besides liman muds, there are also <strong>peat, spring and volcanic<\/strong> peloids \u2014 with different compositions and effects.<\/li>\n<li>Mud therapy benefits the joints, the nervous system and the skin, and boosts the body&#8217;s immune defences.<\/li>\n<li>There are few contraindications, but they are serious \u2014 see them below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How Pomorie became a mud therapy resort<\/h2>\n<p>Pomorie Lake was formed after a catastrophic earthquake in 740 BC. In 1905, Dr Petar Stoyanov &#8220;rediscovered&#8221; it and studied it for several years. Following his research, a mud therapy centre was built, and today Pomorie is a well-known seaside mud therapy resort.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_881\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-881\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-881\" src=\"https:\/\/images.luga.bg\/2015\/10\/pomorijsko_ezero-300x200.png\" alt=\"Pomorie Lake, where the therapeutic liman mud is extracted\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pomorie Lake<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>The types of therapeutic mud (peloids)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Liman muds<\/strong> \u2014 such as the Pomorie mud: they form in salt lakes by the sea, are black and oily, and contain plenty of hydrogen sulphide and minerals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peat muds<\/strong> \u2014 they form in marshes through the prolonged decay of organic matter and are rich in humic acids. In Bulgaria, the best-known deposit is near the town of Banya close to Karlovo: around 30 decares of marshland saturated with mineral water, with a peat layer from 30 cm to 1.5 m thick. The mud is dark brown, with a faint hydrogen sulphide odour. It has a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect and helps swelling to subside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring muds<\/strong> \u2014 silt deposits on the bottom of freshwater basins. They contain both mineral and organic substances and are considered the gentlest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volcanic muds<\/strong> \u2014 they form through volcanic activity; they have the highest mineral content and only traces of organic matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Which conditions is mud therapy recommended for<\/h2>\n<p>Therapeutic mud improves the metabolism and the nourishment of tissues, thereby speeding up their recovery. Peloids are used for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>disorders of the musculoskeletal system;<\/li>\n<li>disorders of the nervous system;<\/li>\n<li>urological and gynaecological problems;<\/li>\n<li>skin conditions \u2014 neurodermatitis, psoriasis, eczema.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mud therapy acts not only on the specific condition, but also strengthens the immune defences of the whole body.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lb-tip\">\n<p class=\"lb-tip-title\">When mud therapy is contraindicated<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tuberculosis and thrombophlebitis;<\/li>\n<li>thyrotoxicosis and renal failure;<\/li>\n<li>cardiovascular and oncological conditions;<\/li>\n<li>acute inflammatory processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Would you like to find out what mud baths are like in practice?
