Immerse yourself in the mud of the Pomorie salt lake.<\/h2>\n

\"pomorie_lake\"<\/a>The lake has been proposed for designation as a protected area, as it fully meets the criteria of the Ramsar Convention for sites of international importance. It is a hypersaline lagoon of natural origin covering 850 ha (up to 1,000 ha including the adjoining wetlands). It is separated from the sea by a sand spit and an artificial dyke connecting Pomorie and Acheloy. In its southern part there is a channel linking it to the Black Sea. The lake is elongated in shape, 6,7 km long and 2 km wide. Therapeutic mud is extracted in the southern part, while the northern part is used for salt production.<\/p>\n

The high salinity of the lake waters accounts for the presence of specific plant and animal species \u2014 glassworts, sea wormwood, sea blite, the Caucasian goby (which lives in waters with a salinity of 80 per mille) and Artemia (an important food source for the birds). Some rare plants listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria can also be found here, such as Black Sea catchfly, water lily, curved parapholis and others.<\/p>\n

Many rare birds nest at the lake. From its dykes you can easily watch pelicans and white storks flying low over the sea. A total of 215 bird species have been recorded in the area, four of which are globally threatened: the Dalmatian pelican, the pygmy cormorant, the ferruginous duck and the corncrake. This is one of the most important nesting sites for the avocet, the black-winged stilt, the little tern and the Kentish plover. The artificial islands built by conservationists are occupied by colonies of common and sandwich terns, avocets and others. The lake is a paradise for plovers and a wintering site of international importance for the mute swan.<\/p>\n

\"pomorie_lakes\"<\/a>Pomorie Lake is a fine example of the coexistence of traditional human activities such as salt and mud extraction with rich biological diversity. It lies within the resort of Pomorie, which offers favourable natural, climatic and balneological conditions for developing and combining seaside recreational tourism with specialised sightseeing and themed travel routes. The town has been a resort since ancient times and is renowned for its principal healing factors: liman mud, lye, sea water and the maritime climate. The therapeutic mud is extracted in the southern part of the lake and is a natural product formed by organic and inorganic compounds through various chemical, biological and microbiological processes taking place in the liman lake. The mud is distinguished by its fine structure, high plasticity, alkaline reaction and hydrogen sulphide odour. Its colour is deep black. It contains a considerable amount of hydrogen sulphide; magnesium \/0,15 g per 100 g of mud\/; chlorides \/1,7 g per 100 g of mud\/; calcium \/0,03 g per 100 g of mud\/; sodium \/0,98 g per 100 g of mud\/; sulphate \/0,2 g per 100 g of mud\/. Traces of iron, silicon dioxide and oestrogens are also present. The healing factors exert a specific effect on the body mainly via nervous and reflex pathways, triggering subtle adaptive responses in which the endocrine mechanisms and the hypothalamic\u2013pituitary\u2013adrenocortical, pituitary\u2013thyroid and sympathetic\u2013adrenal chains play the most important role. Under the influence of therapeutic mud procedures, metabolic processes are significantly activated.<\/p>\n

\"pomorijsko_ezero\"<\/a>Lye is also extracted from the lake, although today lye production is concentrated mainly in Atanasovsko Lake; in terms of composition and properties, however, there is no difference. The anti-inflammatory, vasodilating, antibiological and muscle-relaxing action of lye has also been proven. It has a very good effect on atonic wounds. At the treatment centre it is used mainly in the form of compresses at a temperature of 39-40 degrees for 20 minutes. Electrophoresis with galvanic current is also applied. For upper respiratory tract conditions, inhalations with a 2-5 % aqueous lye solution are carried out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Pomorie is situated on the Black Sea coast \u2014 just 8 km from Burgas Airport, 20 km from the city of Burgas and 19 km from the Sunny Beach tourist complex. The striking location of the town of Pomorie is a landscape feature not only of the Bay of Burgas, but also one of the highlights of the entire Black Sea coast. All year round, thousands of guests from Bulgaria and abroad restore their health at the sanatorium and resort complex, making use of the healing properties of the famous Pomorie mud, and the town has long become a favoured health centre.
\nThe sea water temperature is moderate. The average temperature from May to September is around 24 degrees Celsius. The water remains pleasant for swimming until October, which allows the resort season to be extended, while the abundance of agricultural produce at that time of year not only meets the needs of holidaymakers but also secures opportunities for alternative tourist services. The beach is covered with fine sand, which in many places is almost black due to its rich content of iron, manganese, aluminium and magnesium. It absorbs the sun’s rays strongly and heats up quickly and considerably. The seabed in front of the beach slopes gently and is almost level. Sunshine is strongest in June and July. On average there are 89 clear days and 19 foggy days a year. Rainfall in summer is scarce. Autumn is relatively the rainiest season of the year.<\/p>\n

Building on these natural assets, Pomorie is increasingly taking shape as a modern resort centre.<\/p>\n
