On 14 May 2021, an information campaign begins in Pomorie which, through local products and services, will present to stakeholders in the Burgas region the benefits of the Natura 2000 ecological network for local communities, good practices from other countries, as well as the opportunities for European funding.<\/span><\/p>\n

The events are held under the common title “Natura 2000 and the Gifts of Nature” and will focus on three main themes: balneotherapy with therapeutic mud and lye and salt production from Pomorie Lake, honey production from Strandzha Nature Park, and winemaking in the Burgas region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Landowners and land users, representatives of hunting and fishing associations, tour operators and travel agents from the region have been invited to take part. In an attractive and engaging way, through local products and services, stakeholders will learn not only about the environmental benefits, but also about the economic and social benefits that the Natura 2000 network provides.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first of the information days \u2013 “The Gifts of the Sea”, dedicated to salt production and to Pomorie mud and lye, will open on 14 May at the Salt Museum in Pomorie. Participation is free of charge and everyone is welcome to join the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

It includes a visit to the museum exhibition on salt production in the Pomorie Lake Protected Area. Experts from RIEW-Burgas will present the Natura 2000 sites in the Pomorie area and the protected species found there. Assoc. Prof. Zahariy Dechev from Assen Zlatarov University of Burgas will introduce the audience to the opportunities that Pomorie lye and therapeutic mud offer for the development of balneo, spa and wellness tourism in the context of the Natura 2000 protected sites.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants in the information day will also have the chance to learn about the available opportunities for European funding, as well as about good practices from European countries regarding the economic and social benefits of the ecological network.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pomorie producer Grudimir Grudev will present his own products under the ANCHIALO trade mark, made from salt and lye, while Grand Hotel Pomorie will organise demonstrations of the use of Pomorie lye and therapeutic mud for balneo, spa and health-restoring treatments.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project aims to raise awareness among local communities in the Burgas region of the environmental, economic and social benefits that the Natura 2000 network provides, thereby supporting the achievement of a better conservation status for the species and habitats in the protected sites in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

The beneficiary of the project “A Shared Vision for the Natura 2000 Ecological Network in the Burgas Region”, within which the information campaign “Natura 2000 and the Gifts of Nature” is being carried out, is the National Association “Bulgarian Black Sea Coast”. It is financed by the Operational Programme “Environment”, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund of the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to European Commission studies, the benefits arising from Natura 2000 are estimated at between EUR 200 and 300 billion per year. In Europe, around 4.4 million jobs and EUR 405 billion in annual turnover (2013 figures) are directly linked to maintaining healthy ecosystems, a significant part of which lie within Natura 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, production activities within NATURA 2000 sites contribute to maintaining and protecting biodiversity, while organic production is an additional opportunity and path of development that can be pursued both within the ecological network and beyond it.<\/span><\/p>\n
